No, not Tom Skerritt — that’s the rugged-hero movie guy from Top Gun and Steel Magnolias. This is Tom Scarritt, Tampa lawyer and activist and real-life hero guy: the man who led the crusade to take down the Civil War monument in Tampa and went on to one-up the dithering county commissioners by taking their dare that the public had to raise the money to move the thing and raised so much there was a surplus. A much-honored civil trial lawyer who studied English literature at the University of the South, he put both his literary and litigation skills to work for the cause, speaking forcefully at events like the post-Charlottesville candlelight vigil in St. Pete and arguing his case before the Commission. —David Warner
